Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this place being removed from the Register?
As part of their work to maintain the currency and accuracy of the Tasmanian Heritage Register, the Heritage Council progressively assesses and updates early entries in the Register. The 10 separate entries associated with the stone wall at Sandy Bay Road were identified to be updated and consolidated into a single revised entry. This process was begun, however the initial assessment raised questions about whether the stone wall met the current threshold for a replacement entry in the Heritage Register.

Was research undertaken to support this decision?
A thorough assessment of the history and description of the wall was undertaken by Heritage Tasmania, this assessment did not identify any evidence that the place met any of the criterion listed under section 16 of the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995. This assessment was reviewed by the Heritage Council’s Registration Committee before the Council made the decision to begin the removal process.

If the stone wall is removed from the Heritage Register will it have any heritage protection?
Yes. The stone wall is listed as a Heritage Place in the City of Hobart’s Local Provisions Schedule (#3256). It is also identified as a feature of contributory significance in the Hampden Road Heritage Precinct (HOB.C6.2.4).

Will the whole stone wall at Sandy Bay Road be removed from the Register?
No. This decision relates only to the part of the stone wall in front of 12 Wilmot Street. Other nearby sections of stone wall along Sandy Bay Road are entered in the Heritage Register separately (THR#2375, 2376 and 2378) and will remain on the Register.

What is the process to remove a place from the Register?
Sections 22-27 of the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995 outline the process to remove a place from the Heritage Register. Following the Notice of Intention to Remove these entries from the Register, members of the public may provide a written submission relating to the intention to remove. Further, any person has a right to object to the removals. A submission, or objection, must be made in writing and sent to the Chair, Tasmanian Heritage Council by Post to: GPO Box 618 Hobart 7001, or by email to: enquiries@heritage.tas.gov.au by the 8 September 2025.
